James Cameron's Avatar (part 2)

This post is a little more personal about Avatar. All those who wish to avoid this post can click away now. Even though I've only seen James Cameron's Avatar once, not only do I want to see it again, but I can freely admit that this movie moved me, emotionally and spiritually, in a new way. I really wasn't expecting that. Like I said, when the movie started, the visuals did capture my attention and the story started off a little slow but it worked on me slowly and effectively. At one or two times I was close to crying, but that's natural with a strong movie. I mean, look at Titanic. What this film did though, was that it started making me think about Earth, our own planet. In Avatar, the comparisions of the Na'vi alien race to Native Americans is unmistakable and I do think once in a while about the damage we've done to them, but there was a line somewhere in the movie where one of the characters said that Earth is no longer green and is dying. While some people might unconsciously pass that off, that personally scared me. I mean, what does happen if Earth dies? I'm not a science major and I'm not very smart with the technical details of that, but it inspired me to. Some people are reassuring that there are many people trying to save the enviornment but it can never be sure on how many are actually doing that. I want to help but I'm not exactly sure how. Other people will probably say that preaching about the environment and what not is a cliche and we're all fine. But what if we're not? The real cliche is not that people are preaching about it. The real cliche may be that everybody hears about it, but nobody or not enough people are doing anything about it. I don't mean to attack anyone or sound like a hippy or something but these thoughts worry me. I mean I'm compelled to help, I want to help, but I don't know how. Like I said, I'm not very good with science and I want to be a filmmaker, but at the same time I'm compelled to do something, to help Earth and its environment, but at the same time, I don't want to give up my writing and filmmaking dream so I'm not sure what to do. I then thought what would happen if we tried living in a different way, like the native americans or the Na'vi. A lot of people will think that's nuts because pretty much everyone's used to living in a warm house with plumbing and water and all the comforts, and a car to drive them where they want to go, and having a paying job, and buying things, and being entertained by movies and books and games and what not. Not to mention the religious stuff as well but it could work out somehow. Still, a lot of people are so used to that, that they don't want to let that go because things are fine the way they are. I somewhat agree with that. Trust me readers, I'm not nuts and I don't plan to go native in Brazil or something. I just had all these thoughts swirling around in my head and I needed to write them down. You can call me an idiot or that I'm nuts or whatever. That's fine. Still though, what does everybody think?

James Cameron's Avatar (Part 1)

James Cameron's Avatar is, in a word, an expierience. Amazing is not enough to describe this movie. I know I'm sounding pretty preachy right now, but give me a little time to explain. I first heard about Avatar several months ago and it sounded pretty interesting because I'm a sci-fi, action-adventure and fantasy kind of guy and I started watching James Cameron's movies. I thought they were pretty cool so that strengthed my reason to see this. The trailers and photos added on top of that. Finally, it opened and I got to see it today. The opening visuals definetely grabbed my attention and kept me interested. While the movie started off slow, it slowly and effectively grew on me. It had wonderful characters, effectively and strongly acted by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, who I'll definetely watching for in the future, and of course Sigourney Weaver who's like the current female queen of Sci-Fi. Joel David Moore, who I had last seen in Dodgeball, was pretty cool too. Stephen Lang made a terrific villian as Quarritch and Michelle Rodriguez and the rest of the cast added strong flavor and meat and bones. The story, while most people would not say its original and by describing it as Pochahantas meets Dances with Wolves in outer space, works because James Cameron knows how to take a familair story and make it his own. Not to mention the amount of detail he put in the flora and fauna of the planet moon Pandora and even the human's technologies with ships and robots that made me, a wannabe filmmaker, completely overwhelmed as I don't think I could ever make a science-fiction movie that complex. If you saw my science grades, you'd know why. Still though, this movie moved me and completely fit my requirement for an instant favorite: a great cast with a strong story and depth filled characters with a mian lead hero that grows as he goes along on his adventure, a beautiful and tough, yet sensitive and gentle female romantic love interest, and effective supporting characters that help on the adventure. Avatar's definetely a winner and I can't wait to get it on DVD and I hear Cameron will make two sequels if this movie is successful.

My Attempt at a Blog

Hey there everyone, this is Vegimorph the Movie Boy. I'm a total movie buff/nut and I was curious about blogging so I figured I'd give it a try. Like it says in my header description, I wil be doing occasional movie reviews, many DVD reviews and once in a while movie industry analysis. Simply put, I'm giving my opinion about movies, just for fun. If you disagree about a review or you think I'm wasting my time, you can say so, but I don't want to get into any fights or anything. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. You don't have to wait to wait very long because my first movie review, James Cameron's Avatar, will be coming in two parts tonight. One's a fanboy regular movie review and a second part that's...well, more personal. Also, I will be seeing Sherlock Holmes staring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, which opens up on Christmas Day. I hope you enjoy this blog and feel free to give tips on how I can improve it.
